Asphalt Driveway Repair Cost in Connecticut 2026 | Price Guide

Asphalt driveway repair in Connecticut costs anywhere from $150 to patch a single pothole to $7,200 or more to resurface a two-car driveway. The difference comes down to damage type, base condition, and where the property sits in our service area. We have repaired driveways of every size and condition across Litchfield, New Haven, Hartford, and Fairfield Counties since 1989. These are real numbers from real jobs. Not national averages. Not guesswork.

Most cost guides online pull from national databases and give you numbers that have nothing to do with Connecticut. Our freeze-thaw cycle, our soil conditions, our bedrock, and our labor market are not average. The numbers on this page come from jobs we have priced and completed across all four counties we serve.

Repair cost depends on one thing more than anything else: whether the base has failed or not. A surface crack costs very little to seal. A pothole with a compromised base underneath costs significantly more to fix correctly. A driveway where the alligator cracking covers a third of the surface requires excavation, base correction, and resurfacing — that is not a patch job.

We break down every repair type below with real price ranges for Connecticut properties in 2026.

What Affects Driveway Repair Cost in Connecticut

H3 — Base Condition Is Everything

The single biggest factor in repair cost is whether we need to correct the base or work surface-only. A driveway where the asphalt surface has cracked but the 3/4 processed stone base underneath is still solid costs significantly less to repair than one where water has been getting in for years and the base has softened and destabilized.

We probe every repair area during the estimate. We do not quote base work if we cannot confirm it is needed, and we do not skip it if the probe shows the base has failed. The FHWA pavement distress classification guidelines document the relationship between surface distress patterns and underlying base failure — alligator cracking in particular is a structural signal, not a surface problem.

H3 — Damage Type and Extent

Isolated surface cracking: lowest cost repair. Hot pour Deery crack sealer applied directly, $2 to $4 per linear foot.

Potholes: cost depends entirely on depth and base condition. A shallow pothole with solid base around it patches at $150 to $250. A deeper pothole where the base has eroded beneath it runs $250 to $400 because we need to excavate, regrade stone, and patch in compacted lifts.

Alligator cracking: the most expensive repair by square foot because the entire cracked area must be saw-cut, excavated, and rebuilt from the base up. Patching over alligator cracking without base correction is the most common repair mistake in Connecticut. We see the results of it every season — the same pattern reappears in the same location within one to two years.

Full resurfacing: appropriate when surface degradation is widespread but the base is structurally sound. We mill or scarify the existing surface, address any localized base issues, and overlay with a fresh course of Hot Mix Asphalt Type 2 using our LeeBoy 8500E track paver.

H3 — Property Access and Location

Properties with steep grades, narrow access lanes, or soft shoulders require more careful positioning of equipment. Our compact track loader and mini excavator handle most tight-access residential sites, but mobilization time is a real cost factor when the property is challenging to work around.

H3 — Season and Timing

Hot mix asphalt requires ambient and surface temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit to place and compact correctly. Spring through fall is our repair season. Emergency repairs in cold conditions use cold patch material as a temporary fix — we are honest with every customer that cold patch is a placeholder, not a permanent solution. Connecticut’s 40 to 60 annual freeze-thaw cycles make this especially true. Cold patch opens up within one to two winters in our climate.

What Each Repair Type Actually Involves

H3 — Crack Sealing

Surface cracks that have not yet caused structural failure respond well to hot pour crack sealing. We heat Deery rubberized sealer and apply it directly into the crack under pressure. The material bonds to both faces of the crack and remains flexible through Connecticut temperature swings — expanding and contracting with the asphalt instead of cracking away from it the way rigid fillers do.

Crack sealing is the most cost-effective maintenance service on a residential driveway. A driveway sealed before water penetrates the surface can gain 5 to 8 years of additional life without a full resurfacing job.

H3 — Pothole Patching

Proper pothole repair starts with saw-cutting clean geometric edges around the failed area. Clean edges give the hot mix a proper bond line. We then excavate all failed material, assess whether the base needs correction, and patch in compacted lifts of Hot Mix Asphalt Type 2. Lift-by-lift compaction gives the patch the same density as the surrounding pavement. A single thick uncompacted fill never reaches spec density and fails early.

H3 — Alligator Crack Repair

Alligator cracking is a structural signal. The interconnected pattern of cracks means the base beneath has softened and can no longer support surface load. We excavate the full failed section to the bottom of the problem, remove all compromised material, regrade and compact new 3/4 processed stone base, install geotextile fabric where the soil requires it, and repave with Hot Mix Asphalt Type 2 in proper compacted lifts.

H3 — Edge Repair

Driveway edges fail when water pools along the edge line and there is no lateral support holding the asphalt in place. We saw-cut back to solid material, address any drainage or grading issue at the edge, and repave with properly sloped hot mix. On driveways where recurring edge failure is a pattern, Belgian block or granite curbing provides permanent lateral support. See our asphalt driveway repair service page for the full repair process.

H3 — Full Resurfacing

When surface degradation is too widespread for targeted repair but the base is still structurally sound, resurfacing is the right call. We scarify or mill the existing surface, correct any localized base problems, and overlay with a fresh course using our LeeBoy 8500E track paver compacted by our heavy tandem drum vibratory roller. Resurfacing resets the surface life without the cost of full removal and replacement.

Why the Same Repair Costs More in Some Parts of Connecticut

H3 — Connecticut’s Freeze-Thaw Cycle

Connecticut averages 40 to 60 freeze-thaw cycles per year. Each cycle stresses pavement joints and base material. A repair done correctly with proper base correction and compacted hot mix holds through these cycles for 8 to 12 years. A repair that skips base correction fails within 1 to 3 cycles because the underlying problem keeps expanding. This is why accurate damage assessment before quoting matters more in Connecticut than it does in warmer-climate states.

H3 — Soil Type by County

Fairfield County coastal and inland soil is among the most complex in Connecticut. Clay soils hold water against the base. In many coastal Fairfield properties, geotextile fabric is not optional — it is required to prevent base contamination from underlying soil migration.

Hartford County sits on the Central Lowlands over red sandstone. Hardpan glacial till is common. It feels solid underfoot but must be properly compacted. Skipping compaction verification on Hartford County repairs produces a driveway that pumps and cracks within three years.

New Haven County soil is mixed. The Naugatuck River Valley clay soils are the most challenging in this county for base work. Sandy loam sections in northern New Haven County are more forgiving.

Litchfield County granite bedrock in the northern towns adds excavation cost when base work reaches ledge. Southern Litchfield sandy loam is our most straightforward repair territory.

H3 — Labor and Mobilization

Fairfield County labor rates run 15 to 25 percent above central Connecticut. Rural Litchfield County adds mobilization cost on long hauls to quarries and over weight-restricted roads. Hartford County is our most cost-effective market overall due to proximity to Central Connecticut quarries and accessible terrain.

How Repair Costs Compare Across Our Service Area

Same scope: resurfacing a 1,200 square foot two-car driveway with solid base, no ledge, standard site access.

Town County Estimated Range Torrington Litchfield $3,240 - $6,480 Waterbury New Haven $3,600 - $7,200 Bristol Hartford $3,600 - $6,840 New Milford Litchfield $3,600 - $7,200 Southbury New Haven $3,840 - $7,680 Danbury Fairfield $4,320 - $8,640 Ridgefield Fairfield $4,500 - $9,000+

Ridgefield and Sherman can add significant cost if ledge rock is encountered during any excavation work. We do test pits on all sloped and wooded properties in Fairfield and northern Litchfield Counties before writing a final price.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Driveway?

This is the question we get asked most often on the first site visit. Here is how we think about it.

Repair makes sense when: The driveway is under 15 years old. Damage is isolated to specific areas — potholes, edge failures, alligator sections that do not exceed 40 to 50 percent of total surface area. The base is structurally sound under undamaged sections. Targeted repair delivers 8 to 12 years of additional life at a fraction of full replacement cost.

Replacement makes better sense when: The driveway is 20 or more years old. Alligator cracking or surface failure covers more than half the total area. The base has failed throughout rather than in isolated sections. Multiple past repairs have not held. In these cases, we are repairing symptoms rather than solving the problem. A properly built new driveway on correctly prepared base lasts 20 to 30 years in Connecticut conditions.

We give you a straight answer on which category your driveway falls into after the site visit. We do not push replacement when repair is the right call.

Driveway Repair Cost — Common Questions

How much does crack sealing cost in Connecticut? Crack sealing runs $2 to $4 per linear foot depending on crack width and how much prep is required. Most residential driveways with moderate surface cracking run $150 to $400 for a full crack sealing service. It is the most cost-effective maintenance service we offer — a driveway sealed before water penetrates adds 5 to 8 years without resurfacing.
How much does pothole repair cost in Connecticut? Pothole patching runs $150 to $400 per pothole. A shallow surface pothole with solid base around it patches at $150 to $250. A deeper pothole where the base has eroded underneath runs $250 to $400 because we excavate, regrade stone, and patch in compacted lifts. A surface-only fill that skips base correction fails within one to two Connecticut winters. We do not take shortcuts on base work.
How much does full driveway resurfacing cost in Connecticut? Full resurfacing runs $3 to $6 per square foot depending on driveway size, surface condition, and county. A 1,200 square foot two-car driveway runs $3,600 to $7,200 to resurface in most of our service area, with Fairfield County running $4,320 to $8,640 for the same scope. Resurfacing applies when the surface is too degraded for targeted repair but the base is still structurally sound.
When should I repair instead of replacing my driveway? Repair makes sense when damage is isolated and the driveway is under 15 years old. If damage covers more than 40 to 50 percent of the surface, the base has failed throughout, or the driveway is 20-plus years old, replacement usually delivers better value over 10 years. We walk every property and give you a straight answer on which applies before we write a number.
Does repair cost more in Fairfield County than the rest of Connecticut? Yes. Fairfield County runs 10 to 20 percent higher than Hartford and New Haven Counties for identical repair scopes. Labor rates are higher, some properties have complex access, and ledge rock in inland and northern Fairfield County towns can add excavation cost when base work goes deep. We do test pits on all wooded and sloped Fairfield properties before finalizing a price.
