We washed first, left the bowl alone, came back later in the week, tarred the dry field, two coats, three days off after the coat. What fails is water at the apron first and cracks after that. A long drive can look high and dry from the porch and still dump water at the state road, so we coat the dry field and do not paint the birdbath. Church Road had a root hump we sealed around. Same town, two different reasons we left a strip bare.
